Sharon Friesen talks about inquiry being a disposition cultivated during teaching and learning, rather than a process that “gets done” by students. She talks about successful inquiry leading to deep understanding, giving examples from her own experiences.
I like the way Sharon emphasises the partnership between teachers and students on the journey that is inquiry learning, ie teachers need to be fostering inquiry dispositions in order to promote and support them with their students. I also like the way Sharon states that the ultimate goal is to foster a deeper and renewed understanding of ourselves, and that the product is not the 'end' but actually the awakening of new questions. Very inspiring!
I like the focus in this video on the teacher also needing to have an inquiring disposition where they seek deeper understanding as an adult. I agree that this is very important in order to be able to function effectively as a classroom teacher. I think there is a little too much talk of 'doing' inquiry or working through pre-defined inquiry steps in schools instead of focusing on the bigger picture and this video would be great to watch together in a staff meeting to address this.
